RALEIGH -- J. Melville Broughton Jr., who was the son and namesake of a North Carolina governor and was active in politics, government, business and the law, died Thursday at home after a long illness. He was 75.
"He was a sweet, gentle person and a very fine man," said Robert L. McMillan, a lifelong friend of Broughton, whose father was governor from 1941 to 1945.
Broughton was born in Raleigh and attended public schools, including Broughton High School, which was named after his great uncle.
After high school, Broughton attended Wake Forest College, now called Wake Forest University, and Duke University.
During World War II, Broughton served in the Marine Corps as a first lieutenant. After the war, he studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning his degree in 1949. He served as a prosecutor in Raleigh Municipal Court for four years, then practiced general law for 45 years.
Broughton was chairman of the N.C. Highway Commission from 1957 to 1961.
Although he had been a state chairman of the Democratic Party and an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1968, Broughton supported the election of Jesse Helms and the re-election of President Nixon in 1972.
In 1975, President Ford nominated Broughton to the national Legal Services Board, which provides legal representation for the indigent.
Broughton was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh and was involved in Laubach Literacy International.
