Anthropologist and Archaeologist. Roy Selman Dickens, Jr. was an outstanding archaeologist of the American Southeast who focused on the Cherokee Indians. Educated at Georgia State University, the University of Alabama, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he studied under Lewis H. Larson, David L. DeJarnette, and Joffre L. Coe. Among his many publications was the well reviewed book, Cherokee Prehistory. At the time of his death, he was the Director of the Research Laboratories of Anthropology at UNC-CH. His early and unexpected death cut short a brilliant career.
