"On May 7, 1935, at a hospital in Warren, Ohio, Alfred Welch was informed by Dr. Ross that there was not much hope of survival for his wife Agnes nor for their expected child. Agnes had pneumonia in both lungs, had a very high temperature and was now in labor two months before the baby was due.. But the Lord assisted Dr. Ross that day, and much to his surprise, both mother and child survived. However, the child, now named after an uncle and his doctor, was clad in a tiny diaper, placed in an incubator, and connected to oxygen as he struggled for his first breaths. The parents were told that he might not live to see his first sunrise. William has attended Church in the Valley for twenty-one years, but joined only recently. He loved his church and he loved children and was able to express both of these loves by being Santa Clause during Christmas celebrations. He helped his mother visit nursing homes in New Braunfels each Friday, delivering sermon tapes and small gifts provided by the Friendship Circle at Church in the Valley.
