of BinghamtonAlyce Hopkins Smith Stapleton died peacefully at the age of 90 at her home Tuesday, August 21, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Molly Beach Hopkins and Fancher M. Hopkins, a former Mayor of the City of Binghamton. She was the wife of the late Fredric S. Stapleton and prior to that marriage had been the widow of the late Guthrie C. Smith. Mrs. Stapleton had been active in many community and charity efforts. She had been a board member of General Hospital and Good Shephard-Fairview Home. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church, a sustaining member of the Junior League, a Widow member of the Binghamton Club and a former member of the Monday Afternoon Club. She attended Mt. Holyoke College. She is survived by a son, Guthrie C. Smith, Jr. and his wife Ruth, Charlotte, N.C.; and by a daughter, Shelley Smith Lawson and her husband Stuart, Wilton, Conn.; she is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Sally B. Stapleton, Binghamton and Bernice Stapleton Watson, Cupertino, Calif.; in addition, she is survived by five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held Friday, August 24 at 11 a.m. from the Ernst H. Parsons Funeral Home Inc., 71 Main St., Binghamton. Followed by a private burial service at Vestal Hills Memorial Park. Pastor Carol Krause will officiate.
