Edward Joseph Syvinski, 82, (formerly of Farmington, NH) went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Edward was born on March 13, 1941, to Joseph and Juliette (Boudreau) Syvinski and was the beloved husband of Annette Gaudette-Solis Syvinski; father of Julie Stachura and husband Paul, Desira Rollins, and Jody Libby and husband Rick. He was the stepfather of Lisa (Solis) Hughes and husband Jeff, Alex Solis and wife M'Lissa, Kevin Solis and wife Jane, and Tanya (Solis) McKenzie and husband Bryce; sister Geraldine Lessard, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, eleven step-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia (Servetas) Syvinski, mother Juliette (Syvinski) Tufts, of Rochester, NH, his father Joseph and step-mother Betty Syvinski of So. Berwick, Maine, maternal grandparents, of Massachusetts, and paternal grandparents of Amesbury, Massachusetts, who arrived to the United States as young immigrants through Ellis Island, New York.

Mr. Syvinski joined the Coast Guard shortly after high school along with his future brother-in-law and two buddies. During his time in the service he served at several lighthouses and Coast Guard stations along the southern coast of Maine. It was during a cold November night when the Coast Guard was called upon to go to the lighthouse at Wood Island to pick up the keeper's two-year-old daughter, Tammy, who was ill and take her to the hospital on the mainland. A wave sunk the skiff and plunged the two guardsmen (Seamen R. Bill and E. Syvinski) and toddler into the frigid Atlantic Ocean. By God's grace no lives were lost that fateful night. Notwithstanding this harrowing experience, Mr. Syvinski was given a shot of rum (Coast Guard tradition) and dutifully returned and stood his watch at the Coast Guard station that same night. Mr. Syvinski co-authored a chapter in Margo Alley's book Rogue Wave where he recites this near-death experience. He also served on the ice breaker Eastwind that was commissioned to take supplies to the research station at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, and had an opportunity for shore leave in New Zealand and the Pitcairn Islands. He also served on a ship tracking weather off Labrador, Canada, and was closely involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. He received numerous medals during his four years in the service.

Mr. Syvinski was an avid hunter and fisherman in the woods and rivers in NH, with several hunts in Wyoming and Colorado, and fishing in Montana. After retiring from Textron (NH) he and wife, Annette Syvinski resided in Arizona and toured many states and national parks before settling in Palestine, Texas.

Services will be held at 12:00 noon on August 27, 2023, at St. Philips Episcopal Church located at 106 E. Crawford Street, Palestine, TX under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
