Ernest Lee Nickerson was born to Dearborn Nickerson and Mahala Kinney Nickerson in Weld, Franklin county, Maine in 1877. He had one daughter Marguerite Nickerson Heald with Ruby Clough Nickerson who died in 1905. Ernest moved to Norwich, Connecticut after that and worked for the New Haven Railroad for many years. He was married to Lucy Story Nickerson who preceded him in death in 1925 and then married Delia Smith Champlin of Montville, Connecticut. He was a member of Somerset lodge, No. 34, A.F. and A.M., Columbian commandery and Sachem chapter, O.E.S.
