CAPT. CANNON'S FUNERAL - The body of the late Capt. W.D. Cannon was removed yesterday to the Masonic Temple, where it lay in state, and was visited by many friends of the departed. The funeral will take place from the Masonic Temple this afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the various orders to which he beloved. The many friends of ex-Sheriff "Pop" cannon will regret to learn of his death which occurred at 12:50 o'clock this morning. Mr. cannon has been in ill health for the past two or three years. Soon after he completed his term of office, consumption of the slow, lingering sort, seized him and he has been virtually dying by inches for a year past. He had a wonderful tenacity of life, and a year ago his friends thought he could not survive another month, but he still lingered on, walking about the shadow of his former self, and exciting the sympathy of all who saw him, and who saw death written in his face. A few weeks ago he went to Florida, hoping to be benefited by the change, but instead he grew worse, and his friend, Mr. Dan Schloss, hastened in resdponse to a telegram to his side. He rallied, and Mr. Schloss fearing the end was near, took advantage of the slight improvement by getting him home again while he had sufficient strength to bear the fatigue of the journey. He arrived home two weeks ago and rapidly sunk. His death has been daly and hourly expected for the past week. He realized himself that the end was near and disposed of his earthly affairs accordingly. "Pop," as he was familiarly called, had a host of friends. He was clever and obliging as an official and a man, and no man was better known or more popular in the whole county than he. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss, besides a brother, who resides in Bartlett. (Published in Memphis Avalanche, Memphis, TN, on May 5, 1890)

When the body of W.D. Cannon is laid to rest in mother earth this afternoon, Shelby County will see the last of a citizen who has served her well. Mr. Cannon was a good sheriff, a true friend, and a cool, courageous man, who feared nobody and oppressed nobody. But little more could be truthfully said of any man who has occupied a public position in this county. Less could not truthfully be said of him.
