A Tomnolen native, the son of the late James and Alma Blanton Kellum, he was raised in the Starkville area. Marvin joined the Army where he served in a training unit in France during the Korean Conflict. He worked many years in general maintenance first with Futorian for over 16 years, a short while with Arvin Industries, and he retired with Action Industries in 1994 after 15 years of service. He never met a stranger and was known for spending time talking to others and sharing his testimony where ever he went. He enjoyed camping, fishing, mowing and gardening, fixing all kinds of equipment and taking care of his numerous cats. He was a longtime member of Doty Chapel Baptist Church and was married to Mary Johnston Kellum for 53 years. He was the father of four sons, Rodney Eugene Kellum, Edward Arlie Kellum, Jeffrey Alan Kellum and Charles Marvin Kellum.
