Emmet Marcellus Magill, 93, passed away March 31, 2008, at St. Peter's Hospital after a brief bout of pneumonia.

Emmet was born in Oakes, N.D., on Oct. 30, 1914, to Robert Patrick and Nellie Jones Magill. He graduated from Cleveland School in Verona, N.D., in 1933, then worked and traveled with his parents as a traveling salesman for a while. He moved to Helena with his parents in the mid-1930s.

He worked on the Fort Peck Dam in 1936, and then he enlisted with the Montana Army National Guard state headquarters, 163rd Division, Signal Corps, during the late '30s and early '40s, spending some time at Camp Murry, Wash.

While living in Helena, Emmet met and married Ethel Amsberry in 1938. Together they had three children, Ronald, Donald and Cheryl.

He worked for Eddy's Bakery for a time and then worked for the Singer Sewing Co. as a service man until they moved to Auburn, Wash., in 1940, where Emmet owned and operated a Singer Sewing Shop.

For a period of time they lived in Enumclaw, Wash. When World War II broke out, he worked for the Todd Pacific Shipyards in Tacoma, Wash., working on the Copahee and Bogue naval aircraft carriers as a shipfitter and foreman of his crew.

After the war, his interests turned to carpentry, which he stayed with until 1948, when he moved his family to a farm near Verona.

He farmed until 1958, when they moved back to Helena and continued his carpentry work.

He was very good at it and built his own home with the help of his sons and father-in-law, Burt Amsberry. Emmet, along with his sons, created the business of Magill and Sons in the mid-1960s, and he continued to work until his retirement in the late '70s, when he turned the business over to Ronald.

He was an avid bowler, which he started doing in 1959, and bowled twice a week up until he was about 89 years old. After the death of his wife, Ethel, in 1981, he met and married Donna Hoyt in 1985. They later divorced.

Emmet loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially the little ones. He loved to watch the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos. He had a great Irish sense of humor and pride. His wit, the twinkle in his eye and his teasing nature will be missed.

He is survived by his son, Ronald (Laurie) Magill of Helena; daughter, Cheryl (Ron) Schrader of White Sulphur Springs; daughter-in-law, Alice (Donald) Magill of Helena; sister-in-law, Erma (Joseph) Magill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Ethel; and a son, Donald; sisters, Marie Koppenhaver and Gertrude Kranda; and brothers, Joseph, Harold and Roland, who died as infants.

Interment will follow the Mass at Resurrection Cemetery.
