Son of Alfred W. Ackley and Perthena Tillinghast.

Married Martha Minerva Knight, 9 July 1843 in Sand Bank, Oswego, New York. Four children:
Delia Minerva
Stephen Henry
Alfred Denton
Sarah Ellen "Ella"

Martha died 14 April 1861, and Henry enlisted as a Union soldier, 4 August 1862 in Orwell, New York at age 42, with his brother-in-law, Lewis Barnes. Before he left for service, he arranged for Delia to remain with friends or relatives in Oswego county, and brought Stephen, 12, Denton, 9, and Ella, 6, to the Tillinghast relatives in Norway, Herkimer county, New York.

Henry was a private. He served the state of New York in the C Company, 110th Infantry Regiment. In New Orleans, Louisiana, he was given a disability discharge on 23 November 1863 after being diagnosed with dropsy at University Hospital. He died on the train home.

Henry and Martha had 13 grandchildren.
