"SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. MORELAND SHOCKS STATE
-----
Deceased Was Prominent Civic And Church Worker
-----
PAWNEE, Okla., Sept. 9, 1930 – This little community was shocked Sunday evening, August 31, when the news spread about town That Mrs. Lenora Estelle Moreland, wife of prof G. H. Moreland, principal of the city schools, had passed away.
Mr. and Mrs. Moreland had spent the summer at Tuskegee, but had returned home on account of Mrs. Moreland's illness. Following the return home Mrs. Moreland's physician pronounced that she was suffering from pneumonia, she grew rapidly worse, medical aid seemed of no avail.
The funeral was held Tuesday, the Rev. W. J. Starks, of Langston was specially requested by the family to preach the funeral oration. In a very impressive and gripping manner Rev. Starks told of the usefulness and worth of the deceased to her husband and family and society in general. Rev. Starks took for his text: 'Her Sun is gone down while it is yet day,' Jeremiah 15-4.
The church edifice was filled with the many friends and the family of the deceased, and under an ocean of flowers the body was conveyed to Highland Cemetery for burial.
Mrs. Moreland was 33 years old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Prof. and Mrs. G. M. Tuggle, Wellston; the deceased was educated in the public schools of Oklahoma. She completed her grammar school work in the schools of Tecumseh, and in 1924 completed the Normal course at Langston University.
In 1920 the deceased was married to Prof. G. H. Moreland, and to this union two children were born: George Jr. and Gwendolyn Lenora. Practically all of her life, Mrs. Moreland devoted to church work and Christian endeavor, and at the time of her demise she was a faithful member of new Bethel A. M. E. Church, where the funeral services were held.
As an untiring public servant Mrs. Moreland found time to be the president of the local W. C. T. U.; president of the Pawnee Federation of Colored Women's Clubs; Matron of Pleasant Valley Chapter No. 69, O. E. S.; teacher of adult Bible class in New Bethel S. S.; teacher in the city schools. For several years Mrs. Moreland was also the secretary of the Oklahoma Association of Negro Teachers."
