Maude was the eldest of eight children born to Ida Elizabeth Stroup Armstrong, the second wife of blacksmith Jason Peter Armstrong. She attended school while residing in the Village of Plainwell, Michigan (there in 1900), and relocated with her family to nearby Otsego by 1904, where she worked in the factory of the Eady Shoe Company. Maude married shoemaker Claude C. Johnson at Allegan on her 19th birthday, with Allegan County Justice Herman H. Cook officiating. They soon moved from Otsego to the City of Kalamazoo, where Claude secured work at a paper mill and Maude awaited the arrival of their first child, Roy, born there in the winter of '07. Four more children followed while they lived in Kalamazoo—Gladys, Vern, Beryl and Claudine—during which time Claude accepted a position as an electrician with the phone company. By 1928, the Johnsons had moved about 10 miles north- east to Richland. They returned to Kalama- zoo, however, and were residing at 402 Trimble Avenue when Maude died in an auto accident at the age of 69. Her obituary appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette on Monday, June 11, 1956, as follows:
