Roman Catholic Cardinal. The eldest child of a count, Jesi born Gaspare Bernardo received his first education at the Collegio Nazareno in Rome and successively at the University of Macerata, from where he earned a doctorate in utroque iuris, in both civil and canon laws. Furthering his studies at the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles, he was ordained priest on March 31, 1804. Referendary of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, protonotary apostolic de numero participantium and vicar of the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, he went on to be named ponens of the Congregation of Good Government, first counselor of the Court of the Government of Rome and as such, interim pro-governor of Rome for three times. Elected bishop of Viterbo e Toscanella, receiving his episcopal consecration on August 15, 1826 from Pope Leo XII, he was created cardinal and reserved in pectore by Pope Gregory XVI in the consistory of December 23, 1839. His name was published in the consistory of December 14, 1840, with Pianetti receiving title of San Sisto. Resigning the pastoral government of his see on March 4, 1861, back in Rome he served as secretary of Apostolic Briefs, camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals and grand chancellor of the Pontifical Equestrian Orders. Passing away there, he was laid to rest in the local church of San Salvatore in Lauro in accordance with his wishes.
