Mary was the daughter of David and Dorothy (Lowe) Heffington. She was born c1815 while her parents lived in Lauderdale County, Alabama, and married John Gibbs c1832, probably in Jackson County, Arkansas. John and Mary were listed on the 1840 Jackson County, Arkansas, census (both in the 20-30 age bracket) with two sons aged 5-10 (Stephen-age @7 and Henry-age @6), one son under age 5 (David-age under 1), and two daughters under age 5 (Loyalty-age @3 and Agnes-age @2). They were still living in Jackson County, in Hester Township, on the 1850 census with three additional children: Mary-age 4, John-age 3, and Caroline-age 6 months. They would have another son, James M., in 1852. John Gibbs died in Jackson County c1857 as his estate was appraised in November of that year. Mary was listed on the 1860 census in Grand Glaize Township in Jackson County with her children David, Mary, John, Caroline, and James. Next door was her married daughter, Agnes, who had married her 1st cousin Elijah E. Heffington in 1856. Mary was still living in Grand Glaize Township on the 1870 census but was in the household of her son in law Elijah Heffington, her daughter Agnes having died about 1869. Sometime before 1880 Mary moved to Harve Township, Faulkner County, Arkansas, where her youngest three children had settled. Several of Mary's siblings had migrated from the Jackson and Independence County area to the Faulkner County area as early as the 1840s, so she had a strong family connection to the region prior to her move. She was listed on the census in Harve Township in 1880, living in the home of her daughter Caroline Garrett, who had married her 1st cousin Elisha M. Garrett, in 1871.

It is thought that Mary is possibly buried in Oakland Cemetery, Holland, Faulkner County, Arkansas. Her three youngest children and their families (as well as her older son Henry C.'s wife, Elizabeth Adams, and some of their children) are buried there and that was the last place she was known to have been living. It is not known exactly when she died but she has not been located after 1880.
