James Herschel "Jim" Webb
October 13, 1936 - August 30, 2023

James Herschel "Jim" Webb, 86, entered his eternal rest on August 30, 2023, surrounded by his family at his residence in Bloomington.

Jim was born October 13, 1936, in Monroe County, Indiana, to Leston and Mildred (Jones) Webb. He attended the one-room schoolhouse at South Union from 1942 until 1950, and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1954. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 until 1957 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietam (CV-36) and participated in two deployments with the U.S. 6th Fleet.

After his naval service, Jim returned home and worked with his father at Webb Oil Company on the south side of Bloomington. On Christmas Eve, 1957, he married Patricia Garrison to begin a union that would last the next 66 years.

While working for Nicholson Mobile Home Sales in Bloomington in the early 1970s, Jim set the first "double-wide" home to be placed in Monroe County--he could put any trailer where mountain goats would fear to tread.

Jim joined Monroe Lodge #22 F&AM in 1972 and attained the 32nd Degree. In 1976 he earned an associate degree in HVAC, graduating first in his class from ITT Technical Institute in Indianapolis. He owned and operated Webb Heating and Air Conditioning in Bloomington before moving to southern California, where he helped support the U.S. space program by maintaining heating and cooling systems at production facilities for Northrup and, later, for Rockwell International's Satellite Systems Division.

Following his return to Bloomington in 1988, Jim operated the former Webb Oil Company location as Webb's Unocal 76 service station. He then pursued a lifelong dream to be a long-haul truck driver and retired in 2000.

Jim loved working in his yard and tending to his many flowers, and could make anything not only grow but flourish. He also loved fixing things--especially cars and trucks--and, if he was tinkering in the garage, there was sure to be some bluegrass music coming from a nearby radio.
Jim dearly loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife and their four children: Jimmy Webb (Georgia), Ed Webb, Becky Webb, and Shannon Brown (Wes); four grandchildren: Jennifer Bailey (Judson), Adam Webb, (Aleecia), Joseph White (Ariel), and Jacob White (Mackenzie); eight great-grandchildren: Braylee Maksimov, Sydnee Bailey, Cole Webb, Eli Webb, Camden Webb, Evelyn White, Rosemary White, and Everett White; three brothers, Larry Webb (Sharon), Steve Webb, and Dale Webb (Marie); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Betty Jo Cline (Mark) and Mary Frances Hardy; two brothers, Jackie Webb and John Webb (Betty); and one grandson, Wade Webb.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society of Indiana.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old St Rd 37 Bloomington. With Jim Webster officiating. A visitation will be held from 11:00am to 3:00pm Tuesday, September 5, 2023 also at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at Clear Creek Cemetery.

Allen Funeral Home and Crematory have been entrusted with arrangements.
