J. GAYE WOOLSEY, lifetime resident of the Stephens County area, was born Nov. 22, 1920, to William Spurgeon "Jack" and Toma Wise of Velma, and was the youngest of the six children. She died in Oklahoma City on Thursday, April 10, 2008.
Her services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2008, in First Baptist Church Chapel, Duncan, with the Rev. Charles Roy McConnell officiating, assisted by Don Howland. Interment will be in Duncan Cemetery under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Gaye graduated from Velma-Alma Schools and was a graduate of the St. Anthony School of Nursing in Oklahoma City. She worked at Weedn Hospital in Marlow, McBride's in Oklahoma City, Chickasha Hospital, and Sheppard Hospital in Wichita Falls. Gaye practiced her nursing skills until the 1960s.
She married J.L. Woolsey in Chickasha on Jan. 4, 1943. J.L. and Gaye had one child, Paul. During World War II, Gaye practiced her registered nursing skills and maintained the homefront while J.L. fought in the South Pacific. After the war, the reunited family settled in Duncan in 1946, and Gaye and J.L. lived in Duncan from then until 2002. They then moved to Epworth Villa Retirement Community in Oklahoma City.
Gaye and J.L. started their own gift and stationery business in Duncan in 1958 and were active in the community for decades. She participated in many clubs and organizations over her lifetime, including nursing organizations, study and gardening clubs and veterans auxiliaries. She was particularly active in First Baptist Church of Duncan, and was a member there from after World War II until her death. Gaye was proud of the fact that her grandfather, the Rev. J.J. Ward, had been a pastor at that church in the 1890s.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Conna Woolsey of Oklahoma City; a special niece, Mary Cade of Dallas, Texas; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gaye was predeceased by her parents; her devoted husband, J.L.; and her five siblings, Paul Wise, Carl Ables, Jim Ables, Doris Lloyd, Violet Clark, and all their spouses.
Bearers will be Harold Kaspereit, Marty Askins, David Moore, Clinton Murphree, Terrell Zigler and Tom Zigler.
