May 2, 1925 - November 6, 2016
Resident of San Jose
Frank, as he was known, died on November 6, 2016, at 91.
He is survived by: Kathi Gwynn (Jon Cosby), Mary DeLay (Alan), Frank Gwynn (Carole), Ida Larsen (Craig), Matt Gwynn (Tammy), and Elinor Hoover (Paul). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren and -great-grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife Ann, to whom he was married for 61 years, daughters Terry, Eileen, Laura Rose, and Lorraine, ten siblings, and his parents, Francis Bernard and Elizabeth Ida Burch Gwynn.
Frank was born and raised in La Plata, Maryland. He was an officer in WWII in the U.S. Navy, volunteering to be part of the first wave for a planned Japanese invasion. Through the G.I. Bill, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame, in Indiana, Magna cum Laude, with a BA in Theology.
Frank and Ann married in 1953, and within 10 years had 7 surviving children and had endured several cross-country moves. Frank sold books to schools and libraries, eventually starting his own business. His warehouse became a treasure trove for his children, who were always looking for a good book to read!
Frank was a devout Catholic, involved in his local parish and attending Mass daily. A passionate Notre Dame football fan, he enjoyed beagles, reading WWII and Civil War history, smoking cheap cigars, exploring the West, tending his plants and flowers, telling stories, and gleefully trouncing opponents in card games. He and Ann created a home for themselves at The Atrium, San Jose, where they made many friends.
Funeral Mass Saturday, November 12, 11:00AM, at Holy Family Parish, San Jose.
The family respectfully requests gifts in his memory to Notre Dame or the National Parks Foundation.
