Former Surrogate Vasco P. Abbott, of Gouverneur, senior member of the law firm of Abbott & Dolan and one of the most prominent citizens of Northern New York, died suddenly Saturday night in Baltimore, according to news received at Gouverneur Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Abbott left Gouverneur October 27th for St. Petersburg, Fla., to pass the winter, stopping in New York and Baltimore. He had been in poor health for three years and had spent two winters in the South.
Mr. Abbott was 71 years old. He was born in Fowler, a son of Emery and Hannah Picket Abbott. He was educated in the Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary and St. Lawrence University, being graduated from the latter in 1867. He attended Albany Law School, Union College, being graduated in 1868 with a degree of LL. B. He was admitted to the bar on his 21st birthday and settled in Gouverneur in. 1871. He had a most successful career and his reputation in legal circles extended for beyond the confines of New York State.
He was a special county judge from 1876 to 1881 and surrogate of St. Lawrence county from 1881 to 1893. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1894. In 1900 he entered into partnership with James C. Dolan, now district attorney of St. Lawrence county and continued his practice until about three years ago.
Mr. Abbott was a member of Gouverneur Lodge, No. 217, F. & A. M., the Masonic Club and the Temple Club, being president of the latter at the time of bis death. He was for thirty years a trustee of St. Lawrence University.
A few years ago be entered into a partnership with John McAlpin, New York, and John McDonald, Carthage, the organization being known as the Mac-A-Mac Corporation, with extensive holdings in lumbering tracts near Brandreth in the Adirondack mountains.
He was married in 1872 to Miss Anna E. Farmer,, who with one son, Hugh Abbott, treasurer and manager of the New York Press Corporation, survives him. Another son, Worth P. Abbott, died several years ago. He also leaves two brothers, J. H. Abbott and J. B. Abbott.
The body is expected to arrive at Gouverneur today and the funeral will probably be held Wednesday afternoon.
