The death of Emory W. Abbott occurred at his home on Main street Sunday morning at 3 o'clock. Mr. Abbott died of heart disease. He was 90 years of age and was very well known throughout this locality. He was born in Hopkinton in 1819. His parents were J. B. Abbott and Duraxa Russell Abbott. He was educated in the common schools of Hopkinton and Edwards, and was married in 1839 to Hannah S. Pickett.
There are three children living, J. Henry, J.B. and Vasco P., all of Gouverneur. Mr. Abbott engaged in farming and manufacturing and was a merchant of Fowler for many years. He fought in the Civil war. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon. Burial will be made at Riverside cemetery. Rev. J. S. Wilds will officiate.
Mr. Abbott had held almost every office of responsibility and trust in the town of Fowler and was chairman of the St. Lawrence County Board of Supervisors from 1860 to 1864 and the great number of soldiers which St. Lawrence County furnished in the Civil war was owing, in great measure, to his influence.
He represented St. Lawrence county in the State Legislature during the years 1856 and 1957; when he assisted in securing the necessary legislation for the creation of St. Lawrence university at Canton, from which institution one of his sons and three grandsons have graduated. His son, Vasco P. Abbott, has been a trustee of the institution for about twenty-four years.
Mr. Abbott, while receiving but the simplest rudiments of an education when a boy, developed into one of the strong men of St. Lawrence county and for nearly half a century he had done everything possible to promote education. He was a charter member of the Fortnightly club, organized in 1882, and at the time of his death was secretary of the club.
