Ransom A Wilson was the son of Franklin "Frank" and Sarah Brown "Sally" (Marcum) Wilson. He was married on 19 May 1870, in Christian County, Missouri, to Dica Nancy Jane Maples, and they were the parents of ten children: Ruthey Jane, Frances Susanna, George Washington, Thomas Gideon, Cordelia, Lucy Elizabeth, Robert Edward, Sarah Maliddie "Liddie", Mary Adline and Martha Emiline.

There has been some disagreement or confusion as to his middle name, but on the GAR Family Record document, posted to the left, his name is clearly written as Ransom Asbury. It seems certain that he was named after his mother's older brother, Ransom Asbury Marcum (1820 - 1892).
