HELEN W. SMITH

Stamford, Oct 13. - Helen Woodruff Smith, age 89 yrs. of Stamford, died at her Linden Lodge estate after a lingering illness. She was a native of New York City, but resided in Stamford during most of her life.
Miss Smith was the daughter of James Dickinson Smith a former president of the New York Stock Exchange, a former Connecticut state's treasurer and a Commodore of the New York Yachting club among a few others.
Miss Smith was also the first wife of the former Attorney General, Homer S. Cummings. They were divorced in 1907. **** No immediate family survive.
Funeral services will be held this Friday.

A son Dickinson S. Cummings preceded her in death in 1953.
Survivors are her daughter in law, Mrs. Beryle T. Cummings; one grandson and one great granddaughter all of Florida.

Helen Woodruff Smith was the daughter of Elizabeth Henderson Smith and James Dickinson Smith.

Married 29 June 1897 to Homer Stills Cummings on her father's yacht the " Viking" as it sailed in Long Island sound, off the coast of Larchmont, New York, it was a lavish affair noted in lengthy newspaper articles.
They divorced on 7 October 1907 out of South Dakota.
Helen reverted to her maiden name after the divorce.

One son:
James Dickinson Schuyler Cummings [1898-1953] he married to Beryl McQueen Thompson and they had one son. James full name is listed as such in his Grandfather, James D. Smith very detailed will.

Helen W Smith lived most of her life in Linden Lodge estate, owned by her father, James D. Smith. It sat at the corner of Hope St. and Glenbrook Rd., in Stamford, Conn., now demolished but viewable on Stamford Historical Society web page.
