Obituary (from the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow funeral home website):

Deborah Sue Al-Tal (most recently, Debbie Starling) passed away on September 3, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born to Theodore and Crystal Novotny on September 18, 1953, in Houston, Texas.

Debbie was an excellent mother who focused on raising two boys to be loving, ethical, responsible people. She also was a single mother who worked to support herself and her sons with an eighth-grade education. She eventually obtained a GED and obtained a few certifications, which allowed her to earn a living.

She's the type of mother who welcomed all friends and family. If you needed money and she could spare it, it was yours. If you needed a meal, she fed you, if you needed a place to sleep, there was always at least a couch. She taught her sons to never turn away a person in need, but not for any reason other than they needed it. Pragmatic, and perfectly so, as she also taught her sons never to endanger themselves to help others, but always be willing to at least offer solutions.

Not Mother Theresa, but the right kind of mother to teach her sons how to live in a harsh world and how to make themselves better, and in turn inspire those around them to do the same.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Charles Starling of Harker Heights, Texas; sons, Phillip Pilcher of Garland, Texas, and Joseph Al-Tal of Neenah, Wisconsin; her sister Marti Hanson of Wimberly, TX and brother John Novotny of Enid, OK. As well as all their family members, including spouses, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, 2023, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. The service will also be live streamed at TJMfuneral.com on Debbie's obituary page by clicking on the following link: https://celebrationoflife.tv/. After the service, the recorded live stream will be available for viewing at the same link location. Interment will be held at Ridgeview Memorial Park following the service.
