May 27, 1927 - April 26, 2016 Russell Alger Alford, Jr., of Mountain Brook, died peacefully at home on April 26, 2016, at the age of 88. Russell was born May 24, 1927, son of Russell Alger Alford, Sr. and Alma Rita Dilger Alford. He attended Edgewood Grammer School and Phillips High School where he was a Major in the ROTC, and graduated in 1944. Mr. Alford was a veteran of WWII where he served in the United States Navy. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) and graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1949. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society. Mr. Alford was employed by Alabama Power Company in 1949, serving his career in the Power Delivery department. He retired as Design Services Manager after 40 years with the company. He was Director of the Engineering Council of Alabama, Director of Inner-Society Council of Engineers, Professional Engineer of Alabama, and Chairman of the Birmingham Section of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society of Birmingham, Saint Andrews Society of the Middle South, the Country Club of Birmingham, and a longtime member of Canterbury United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Friday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation following in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmett O'Neil Library or the charity of your choice.
