Edward Bernard Yancy, also known as "Big Ed", was born on February 1, 1964, to Clemmie Yancy and Willie Lee Johnson. His Elementary education began with Head Start, before moving on to Roger Q. Mills and N. W. Harllee. He then advanced to O. W. Holmes Middle School and graduated from Sunset High School, where he was named "Most Valuable Basketball Player". Edward attended Jarvis Christian College his freshman year, and Texas College for a short period of time.

Edward grew up in the "Bottom", now called the "Bottom District", Dallas, TX. He was loved by the entire neighborhood and enjoyed attending Oak Cliff Park (Eloise Lundy Recreation Center). Swimming was one of his favorite activities, along with basketball, bike riding and sliding down the levy on cardboard. He was employed by the City of Dallas Parks & Recreation Center for many years, Mary Kay Cosmetics, and the Dallas Convention Center.

Edward was married to Retha Moore for 18 years, and from that marriage became Larquita and Leviticus Yancy. He moved to Longview, Texas around 2007 where he was welcomed by many there as well.
