Tom was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp proudly serving his country. He spent many, many years in the transportation industry with jobs ranging from truck driver, fleet owner, broker and dispatcher. Those who had the opportunity to call him boss thoroughly respected him and were loyal because of the care and compassion he had for every employee. The very spirit he shared with those employees overflowed to every area of his life. An avid Ford lover, after retirement he transported vehicles for car dealerships, and his final and most treasured job was bus duty for Betti. Tom believed in making his community a better place. For years he and his wife were in leadership of the Hickory Moose Lodge, he was an active member of the American Legion Post 48, and member of Mays Chapel Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Newell Alexander; brother, Arthur Alexander; and three sisters, Ethel Sigmon, Ruth Alexander, and Geraldine Little. Those left to cherish his memory and continue on in his legacy are his son David (Robin) Alexander of Sugar Mountain, daughter Myra (Bob) Holland of Hickory, three grandchildren whom he had great pride, Bradley Alexander of Lincolnton, Erica (Micah) Page & Amanda (Joe) Haney, of Hickory, two great grandchildren whom he adored Ella and Logan Page of Hickory, and his pride, joy and best friend Betti Confetti Haney.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 in the chapel at Burke Mortuary and Crematory of Newton with Pastor Jason Guyer officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory with military honor by The Marine Corps League of Hickory.
