James Martin Maxwell was born to James Maxwell and Frances Hughes. On 2 Aug 1862, James joined up to serve in the Civil War and eventually was a member of the Co. B. 1 Reg't Ohio Heavy Artillery. He was mustered out on the 20th of June 1865. On the 1st of Jan 1869 he married Esther A. (J.) Shaffer in Chilliothe, Ross, Ohio. They had 11 children: Henry Lymus, Letitia Norra, Amanda, John Abernathy, Effie Malvina, Alfred H., Adrian Ivy, James Blaine, Algert, Mary Elizabeth and Albert Sidney.
