FRANCES T. EDMONDSON
Frances Tabb Edmondson, 95, of the 1200 block of Daniel Ave., died Sept. 11, 1997, in her residence.
Mrs. Edmondson was a native of Portsmouth and a resident of Tidewater for all of her life. She was the daughter of the late Mary Saunders and George Augustine Tabb of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Edmondson, and her sister, Mary Saunders Armstrong. She retired from the Portsmouth School System. ``Miss Tabb'' will be remembered by many as the teacher of home economics at Woodrow Wilson High School. She taught dietetics at both Portsmouth hospitals, then King's Daughters and Portsmouth Memorial. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk, where she worked with the acolytes and crucifers for many years.
Frances became a bridge enthusiast. After the death of her husband, she became a life master at duplicate bridge and played against many of those considered expert. She played last with her Monday Friends on Sept. 8, 1997.
Mrs. Edmondson lived to carry out the desire of her husband, to establish scholarship grants to Hampden-Sydney College and to the University of Virginia Medical School to continue to assist those in need of support.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Edmondson Grinnan of Norfolk; a son, William P. Edmondson Jr., M.D. and his wife, Betty Rae, of Norfolk; and two grandsons, William P. Edmondson III and George L.B. Grinnan Jr. and his wife, Karen; three granddaughters, Susan Edmondson Phillips and husband, Jerry, Katherine Grinnan Batzel and her husband, Mark, and Melissa Edmondson; and five great-grandchildren; her nephew, Thomas W. Armstrong, and niece, Susan A. Watts.
A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Ross Wright. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who desire should make a donation to any of the above institutions, or to the Eastern Virginia Medical School. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling the arrangements.
