Anthony Francis Abarno was the son of Charles (Carlo) Abarno and Anna Maria) Mary Alvino Abarno. Both his parents were born in Italy. They married 4 November 1882 in Manhattan, NY.

As a private in the 213th Aero Squadron, he sailed from New York City on the troopship, SS "Tuscania," which was torpedoed and sunk in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland on 5 February 1918 by German submarine UB-77. He returned from World War I aboard the "America" in March 1919. His military serial number was 250,117. On both voyages, he listed his mother, Mrs. Mary Abarno of Flushing NY as his next-of-kin.

In 1920, Anthony, age 29, single, a clerical worker in an insurance company, lived at 19 Willow Street in Flushing, Queens NY with his mother and siblings Josephine, Jennie, Charles and Mary, plus his married sister Rose Enstice, her husband and their son.

In 1930 Anthony, age 40, single, a fire insurance agent, lived in Queens NY with his mother and siblings Josephine, Charles and Mary.

On 23 June 1939 in Queens NY, Anthony married Margaret Van Cleef. She was born 24 November 1890 in Manhattan NY and died 10 February 1956 in Queens NY. Margaret was the daughter of James Joseph Van Cleef and Ellen (White) Cleef. She is buried in Flushing Cemetery also, and shares her tombstone with her mother Ellen.

In the 1940 census, Anthony F. Abarno, who operated his own real estate business, resided in Flushing, Queens NY. Also in the household were his wife Margaret, his mother Maria and his single sister, Mary. In 1950, Anthony and wife Margaret lived in Queens NY. Anthony was the proprietor of an insurance agency.

Services for Anthony F. Abarno, 87, of Flushing, an insurance firm owner in downtown Flushing for more than 50 years, will be held at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow in the Gleason funeral home, Flushing. He died Tuesday.

Born in Manhattan, he has been a resident of Flushing for about 60 years. He owned and operated the Abarno Insurance Co. on Roosevelt Ave. for more than 50 years until his retirement 15 years ago.

An Army veteran of World War I who served in Euroope, he was a 55-year member and former commander of the William Leonard American Legion Post of Flushing. Besides being active in veterans' affairs he was a member of the Queens Grand Jurors Association and the Flushing Chamber of Commerce.

Abarno is survived by a brother, Charles, and a sister, Rose Enstice. Burial will be in Flushing Cemetery.
