Jay V. McKnight, 80, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died unexpectedly early Monday morning at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John V. and Mae Ella (Weaver) McKnight.

Surviving are a son, Stephen of Pittsburgh; two sisters: Bonilee Irwin and Beverly McKee, both of Altoona; a brother, Glenn E. McKnight of Juniata; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers: William, Leroy, Joseph and Don.

Mr. McKnight was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg.

He retired from the maintenance department of the Altoona Area School District as a power plant attendant and formerly was a butcher for A&P Markets.

Mr. McKnight served on the Hollidaysburg Area School Board of Directors from 1961-93. He was a member of the Pennsylvania School Board Association.

He was a graduate of Altoona High School.

Mr. McKnight was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a 50-year member and past master of Portage Lodge 220 F&AM and member of Ligonier Lodge of F&AM.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at William G. Bigelow II Funeral Home, where a Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home by the Rev. Dr. D.L. Brinton Shafer. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brian Morden Foundation, 2809 Columbia Drive, Altoona, PA 16602.
