He was a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. Most likely, he was a tank platoon commander. He took part in the Bataan Death March and was held as a Prisoner of War at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan in the Philippine Islands. He died on the Japanese hell ship the Arisan Maru when it was sunk by an American submarine. 1794 POWs died on the ship.

West Monroe Attorney Perished When Bombed At Sea
Mr. & Mrs. Willie Stokes Heard, Sr., have received a letter from the War Department announcing the death of their son, Lt. Willie Stokes Heard, Jr., aboard the Arisan Maru, a Japanese prison ship last October 24, 1944.

Lieutenant Heard, a tank corps officer under the command of Colonel Weaver, was taken prisoner upon the fall of Bataan on May 9, 1942. From Bataan he took the famed "Bataan Dean March" to Camp O'Donnel and later he was transferred to Davio on Mandanao Isalnd in the Philippines. He was then sent to Manila, where he remained until October of last year.

He was placed on the Arisan Maru, a Japanese prison ship headed for Japan with 1,775 Americans aboard to be used as slave workers. Lieutenant Heard lost his live when the Arisan Maru was sunk by an American submarine. Only five men escaped from the boat.

The Red Cross transmitted to the government an official list obtained from the Japanese government of those lost in the sinking.

Lieutenant Heard was a graduate of Louisiana State University law school and was practicing law in Shreveport at the time he entered service. He held a reserve officer's commission from the ROTC at L S U.

He is survived by her parents:

Lt. Oliver Heard stationed at a Naval Base in San Francisco
Lt. (jg) Travis Heard, navy fighter pilot who has been missing in action near Guadal Canal since July 4, 1942.
