PENSION RECORD INFO:

Widows pension record #114823 was later combined into the minor pension record #217.435

Details:

Catharine filed for a widow's pension on November 22, 1864. She included a letter from a pastor at the church she was married at, and the marriage record. This application almost failed because she couldn't recall the exact dates of birth for her children and they called her on it. Thankfully, she got letters from the pastors confirming baptism dates of her youngest children. Some of those who attended the baptisms also confirmed her marriage. Her eldest son Peter confirmed she was married to his father and was his mother. A few neighbors also declared she was a reliable and credible person. The government included letters from the assistant adjunct general, and the surgeon general who each confirmed Conrad Schnapp was loyal and had died.

In June of 1865 Catharine was granted a widow's pension of $8 a month and $2 extra for each child ( at the time this was the youngest kids: Mary, Margaret, Eva, and Caroline)

In July of 1874, Catharine wrote again to the pension office and announced her marriage to John Schifferli. A letter from a pastor confirms the marriage occurred at St. Anns Catholic Church in Buffalo, NY, on June 30th, 1874. And so, the government ended her widow's pension.

Shortly after, a minor's pension was filed for her youngest child with Conrad on August 24th, 1874. The state of New York appointed guardianship over the youngest, Caroline, on September 22nd, 1874, to Catharine, and she received $140 for Carolines care until she turned twenty-one years of age.

All pension claim records were completed on January 15th, 1875 and the case file for Conrad Schnapp closed
