Son of:
Eugene Babcock and Margaret Plaunt

Husband of:
Roberta Jean Calkins, married June 9, 1956 in Kalkaska, Kalkaska County, Michigan.

Victor C. Babcock passed away on September 19, 2023. He was born on May 12, 1933 in Pointe Aux Pins on Bois Blanc Island, Michigan; the place where he lived for all but for 4 of his years. In the early 1940's the family moved to Cheboygan for two years to find work during the Second World War. In the mid 1950's he was drafted by the Army and served two years, with his assignment being in Germany, after he completed basic training. He married Roberta (Berta) Jean Calkins on June 9, 1956, after courting her on her visits to her aunt on Bois Blanc Island. He even was saved in her family's church in Garfield, Michigan (outside of Kalkaska), since Berta wouldn't consider marrying someone who wasn't saved.

They had two sons, Mark Duane and Tony Ray in 1959 and 1965 respectively. Tony was born in the family home, since Berta wasn't able to leave the island before going into labor. Tony was thus born just several hundred yards from where Victor was born. As a young boy Victor delivered groceries in his wagon, brought over by his grandfather's ferry, to various summer residents. The money he earned in tips was saved and bought his school clothes each fall. As a teenager he delivered ice to people for their ice boxes from his father's ice business. He drove and delivered the ice in an old pick up, LONG before he had an "official" driver's license! Victor went on to work for Mackinac County Road Commission for 38 years, maintaining and greatly improving the roads on Bois Blanc Island. He also did carpentry work as well as wiring countless homes on the island after electricity arrived there in 1965.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Eugene Babcock and Margaret Plaunt, his wife, Roberta Calkins; his sisters as well as their spouses: Joyce (William) Jackson, Audrey Gahn (Hubert) Kirchoff (Norman), Marie (Vince) Mangiapane and Shirley (Willard) Gahn.

He is survived by his brother Tom (Pat) Babcock, his two sons; Mark (Terry Radloff) Babcock and Tony (Chris) Babcock, two grandsons; Nathan (Caitlin) Babcock and Cameron (Taylor) Babcock as well as two great granddaughters, (both born in 2022) Winnie and Scarlett.

Victor was an avid hunter and fisherman and could never imagine living or being anywhere other than Bois Blanc Island. Internment will be next to his wife, and at the foot of his parents, at Woodland Glade Cemetery on Bois Blanc Island.

The family will receive friends at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Friday, September 22nd from 2-6pm, and on Saturday at the funeral home from 10-11am. Services celebrating Victor's life will be held at the funeral home at 11am. Courtesy of Stone Funeral Home, Inc.
