George Thomas McElroy, 78, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 19, 2023, as his job on earth was done. He was born Feb. 12, 1945, to C.S. and Violet, nee Compton, McElroy in Livingston, TX.
He married the love of his life, Helen Jeffries on April 20, 1973 in Sugarland, TX. George went by many names, George Thomas McElroy, Babe, Daddy, Uncle Tom, Uncle George, "Charlie", Booger, Grandpa and Hop Pop. He was a loving husband and father. George enjoyed fishing, hunting and working around the ranch. He was a member of the Comfort VFW and the American Legion. He served his country as an aircraft maintenance specialist in the U.S. Airforce in Da Nang, Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charley Stewart (C.S) and Hassie Violet (Compton) McElroy along with his three brothers and four sisters; Maurine Armitage, Virgil McElroy, Mildred Hall, Lucille Matthews, Joe McElroy, Katherine Ussery, and Charles McElroy.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Helen McElroy. Daughter Melinda and husband Ed with step grandchildren Jamie and Joseph Lawrence of Lake Ozark, Missouri; grandson Devon Snider of Missouri; granddaughter Meagan (Snider) Ideker and husband Tucker Ideker with great grandchildren Liam and Silas Ideker of Joplin, Missouri. Daughter Wendy and husband Steve Johnson with granddaughter Leah Johnson of San Antonio, TX. and son Geoffrey and wife Beth McElroy with grandchildren Mason, Wyatt, Caleb, and Emma McElroy of Marble Falls, TX. As well as a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held on Thursday September 28th from 11:00AM to 1:00PM with services following at 1:00PM, at Schaetter Funeral Home in Comfort, TX with Pastor Greg Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Comfort Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Mason McElroy, Steve Johnson, Steve Fallon, John Purkey, Kenny McElroy, and Tom Marler. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wyatt McElroy, Caleb McElroy, and Harrison Purkey.
