Lois C. Barter passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her residence in Falmouth. On Saturday, September 16, 2023, she went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was 95 years young. She was an active day tripper who would travel by car, or maybe on a tour bus trip, to some little spot in Maine and have lunch with her friends. She very much enjoyed life. Lois will be missed dearly by her family & friends.

Lois was born at home on Walnut Street in Portland, Maine on March 22nd, 1928, to Mildred B. Caleb (Bennett) and Royal S. Caleb. She and her sister were raised in Portland, where their father worked numerous manual labor jobs, fought for his country in the US Calvary, a member of the Freemason, and proudly belonged to the longshoreman's local 861 and 1130 of the PLSBS and his beloved wife Mildred was a home maker and an active member of The Order of The Eastern Star.

Lois grew up on Munjoy Hill and attended local schools, graduating from Portland High School.

Lois began a professional career as a secretary for Roy Adams at Burnham & Morrill Baked Beans and later became the personal secretary for George Morrill until the end of his life. Moving on in her career she was employed by General Electric in South Portland as the personal secretary for Paul Lehay, in Portland for the Sprague Company on Fore Street, the Dale Carnegie organization in Cape Elizabeth, and retired from an office position for the Social Secretary Administration.

Lois enjoyed a long retirement traveling to Alaska, Branson Missouri, Las Vegas, and other places that she found intriguing. She also enjoyed playing cards, loved a good game of scrabble and was an avid gardener that would spend hours tending her gardens at her home in Falmouth. She is remembered for her love of birds. She enjoyed sitting at her kitchen window watching the many birds that would come to enjoy some good eats at the numerous bird feeders and play in the bird baths.

Her sons were never without a sweater, as Lois was an avid knitter. She enjoyed knitting sweaters, hats, and mittens for her family. Lois was a great cook! She made the world's best Chop Suey. She also made a dynamite apple pie and could always whip up a great meal in the pressure cooker and like her mother, loved to bake bread.

Lois was a long-time member of First Baptist Church on Congress St. and recently communicant of first Lutheran Church on Auburn St.

Lois is survived by her two sons Daniel S. Barter and James H. Barter. Her sister-in-law Doris Barter, her granddaughter, Adrienne Mango, her husband Chris Mango and three great granddaughters; Adeline, Vivian, and Samantha. Along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Royal S. & Mildred B Caleb (Bennett) and her sister Mildred Howell.

Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 27th from 4-8 pm at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland Maine. A small graveside service at Brooklawn Cemetery will be held Thursday, September 28th at 11 am.
