Archibald Calvin was the son of William Calvin and Mary Ann Graham, who married in 1848 in Scotland. He may have been named for his grandmother Anne Hadden Calvin's family, with whom "Archibald" was a favorite name.

Civil registrations show Archibald's birth was registered in the last quarter of 1862; he was obviously a twin to his brother George Graham Calvin, whose birth was registered in the same quarter of the same year. When George was admitted to the Royal Military Asylum at Chelsea in 1866, a minister stated his birth date to be September 10, 1862.

William Calvin was a soldier in the Royal Artillery, and his and Mary Ann's children were born in different places where he was stationed for his military service: Scotland, Mauritius, Bombay, and in Dover, England. Sadly, a son John was born in 1857 and died in 1858 in Bombay, and their son Archibald, born in 1862 in Dover, died in 1863.

More tragedy came for the family when William died in 1865 and his wife Mary Ann in 1866, leaving their surviving children as orphans.
