Samuel Wakeman, was manager for Bethlehem Steel Co.; at 78
Samuel Wakeman, a former manager with Bethlehem Steel company died Wednesday in his Cohasset home after brief illness. He was 78.
Mr. Wakeman was a former manager with Bethlehem Steel Co., Boston shipbuilding division, at the firm's Quincy and East Boston shipyards. He retired in 1964.
During World War II, Mr. Wakeman was employed by Bethlehem Steel to manage the company's Hingham shipyard, which built destroyer escorts and landing craft for the British and US navies. He started his career as a shipbuilder at Bath Iron Works in Bath Maine.
He was a 1930 graduate of Cornell University and a 1932 graduate of Harvard Business School. While at Cornell, he was captain of the varsity football team and marshal of his graduating class.
In 1982, Cornell inducted him into its athletic hall of fame. He was a member of the Cornell council, past president of the trustees of Thayer Academy in Braintree, a trustee of Derby Academy in Hingham and a trusty of Northeastern University. He was also a member of the Country Club, Brookline, the Hockgebirge Ski Club, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the Cruising Club of America, the Beverly Yacht Club, the Cohasset Yacht Club and the Harvard Club.
He leaves his wife, Frances (McElwain); three daughters, Nancy of San Francisco, Judy B. Ferenbach of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Susan Davis of Wellesley; on son Samuel W. (1943-2022) of Cohasset; a brother, Richard V. of Marion; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Dec. 22, in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Cohasset. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain
