Jane Grabenstein-Chandler
December 1st, 1941-September 26, 2023
Jane Grabenstein Chandler passed away Tuesday, September 26th. Jane was born December 1, 1941 to Ray and Ruth Grabenstein in Eustis, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don Chandler and her sister Mary Louise. She is survived by her son Brent (Kelly) Gengenbach of Eustis NE; daughter Janine (Scott) Porter of Augusta KS; her beloved grandchildren Lauren (Tanner) Anderson; Courtney (Brant) Arends; Blake (Brooke) Gengenbach; Kylie Porter; adored great-grandchildren Rowan, Breccan, and Crue Anderson; Saylor, Saige, Sterling, and Knox Arends, and Emerson Gengenbach; brother Robert (Cindy) Grabenstein; sister Ann (Paul) O'Hara and nieces and nephews. Jane is also survived by her special friend Roger Kirst whom she had recently made her home with. Jane and Roger had planned to continue an active retirement which included enjoying life, family, and worldwide travel.

In 1960 she married her high school sweetheart, Doug Gengenbach. To this union, her two children were born. The family lived on a farm near Eustis, NE until the marriage ended in 1978. At that time she completed her BS degree at Kearney State College graduating Summa cum Laude and moved to Lincoln to enroll in the University of Nebraska College of Law. She received her JD in 1982 at the age of 40.

In 1985 she married Don Chandler and the couple made their home in Lincoln. They were married 35 years with 28 of those years traveling the world. They visited every state but ND. Don pre-deceased her in 2021.
Jane was employed as an attorney for the Nebraska Legislature and later for the State Department of Corrections from which she retired in 2004. Her retirement allowed her to fully engage in her passion of quilting…and quilt she did. An active member of the Lincoln Quilters Guild, her special interest was making Cuddle Quilts and Project Linus quilts for children. When not quilting she was sewing, again to benefit others. Jane made hundreds of Covid masks during the pandemic and put her sewing skills to use for many local and third world causes. Jane found other avenues of service, serving as an usher for many years at the Lied Center and a member of PEO. She loved theatrical performances and was a talented pianist herself, always having background instrumental music playing while home. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and Mahjong with her many friends.

Jane will be sadly missed and always will hold a place in our hearts. She made the world a better place.

We would love to have you join us to honor her life on October 7th, 2023 at First Plymouth, 2000 D St. at 11am with a luncheon at the church to follow.

Memorials have been established with Friendship Home, PLAN International USA, and First Plymouth Church.
