Don Rowley Rogers, 73, of Suffield, beloved husband of Rosemary A. (Washburn) Rogers passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA. Born June 15, 1943 in Cooperstown, NY, the son of the late Raymond and Harriet (Rowley) Rogers. He grew up in Cooperstown, he graduated from Cornell University in 1965 majoring in both Agronomy and Economics. He began his career with Cornell Cooperative Extension, serving as the County Extension Director and Business Management Program Leader for 4 years during which time he received the Distinguished Service Award. He and his family moved to Longmeadow, MA in 1977 where he worked for Farm Credit East for the next 30 years, eventually earning the title Senior Vice President and Senior Business Consultant. Don was founder of the Farm Start Program, he created the very successful NE Regional Dairy Challenge, and received the Richard Popp Leadership Award. Don was very active in his churches. In Cooperstown and Red Hook, he was a member of United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and a Youth Fellowship Leader. In Longmeadow he was a member of First Church of Christ and served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Ushers. Don was very proud of the many years he devoted to the youth of his communities. He was a coach for many children in baseball, softball and basketball, and in 1994 he received an award for "Unselfish dedication to Longmeadow youth on and off the field". In 2008 Don was inducted into the Cooperstown Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in basketball, cross-country, track, tennis, and baseball. Some of Don's most treasured memories came from spending time with his family at Mt. Miles, NY. In Suffield you could always find him planting flowers at Eastwoods. Besides Rosemary, his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his four children, Robin Tirrell, Cheryl Rogers, Tom Rogers (Mary), and Glen Rogers; five grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsay and Christopher Tirrell, Rose and Glen Rogers; his sister, Merrilyn O'Connell, nephew Brian Rogers and niece Bonnie Rogers. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 9, 2017, 2:00 PM, at First Church of Christ, 763 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, MA. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
