American football All-Pro running back. He was the first Black captain of the University of Michigan football team, where he played from 1966 to 1968. He was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 20th pick in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft. Traded to the New York Giants for the 1970 season, he went on to become the first Giants player to rush for at least 1,000 yards in one season, a feat which he accomplished twice (1970 and 1972). He remained with the Giants through the 1975 season. In June 1976, he signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, but was cut before the season began.
