Rivers, Ruby Velera, 78, homemaker and area volunteer, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Friendly Acres. Mrs. Rivers was born to Ina and Orla Turner on Oct. 22, 1926 in Newton, KS. She attended Stone School and graduated from Newton High School.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Paul Regier and Jim Rivers; daughter, Kathy; sister, Vi Goertzen of North Newton and brother, Marle Turner.
She was actively involved in the community, operating a half-way house for substance abusers and volunteering at Central Homecare and Hospice for four and half years. She also worked as a volunteer at Kauffman Museum, the SCHICK program, and Kansas Senior Services and Retired Senior Volunteer Program, from which she received the Volunteer of the Year award. She was a member of First Mennonite Church in Newton. She also volunteered 8,895 hours with the RSVP Committee. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 at First Mennonite Church. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, Central Homecare and Hospice and Hospice Care of Kansas in c/o Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.
