Robert Frederick Johnson, 79, passed away on May 27, 2010, at his residence following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bennington on Jan. 8, 1931, the son of Frederick and Idella Boulet Johnson, he graduated from Bennington High in 1949. While he was a senior, he went to work part-time for the First National Bank of Bennington, first as a teller, then head teller, and finally in the bookkeeping department. After finishing high school he became interested in doing tax returns and accounting for friends and relatives. Bob left the bank after 10 years, but while he was there he was instrumental in getting pledges and setting up the bookkeeping system for the Bennington Catholic High School. He has also worked for D & D Jolivette Electric, North Radio Company, WoodFlong, and ran his own business, Bob's Two-Way Radio Supply. He was General Manager of Dodge Machine Company, and from there he went to Atlantis Equipment Company in Stephentown, N.Y., from which he retired. At one time, he was an auditor for the Town of Bennington. He and his wife also worked for Hemmings Motor News as car show representatives, and he ran the Hemmings popper at car shows and events. Bob leaves his wife, Patsy Aline Savage Johnson; children, Kenneth (Joann), Robbie and Cheryl; his sisters, Lorraine (Merton) Cross and Doris (Ronald) Alderman, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves his stepchildren, Arla (Chris Barry) Foster, Donna Goodhue and Brenda (Bruce) Lonergan. He was predeceased by his parents; sons, Peter and Clifton; and a stepdaughter, Nola Foster. Bob had many talents and was willing to share his time and talents with his friends. He was a member of the Bennington Club and worked diligently to keep the Club running with very little help and money. We would like to thank the caring doctors and nurses at SWV Oncology, the people from Hospice who made our wait easier, and the Bennington Rescue Squad who responded very graciously whenever we called. Bob has willed his body to the Albany Medical School. There will be no calling hours or services at this time. When his cremains are returned, we will have a burial ceremony.
