Anyone who knew Jane Marie Hafeman knew she was in no way, shape, or form a Plain Jane. Born August 26, 1952, to Orville and Audrey Fameree of Casco, that was just the beginning of a woman who filled the world with so much compassion, love, joy, and an energy that uplifted all those around her.
Jane grew up as the oldest sibling in a busy Casco household surrounded by three sisters and three brothers. Her early years in the Fameree household were when her compassion first took root in helping to care for her brothers and sisters. As the hereditary Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) revealed itself in Jane, like it did in several siblings and so many extended family members, compassion became stronger and engrained itself throughout the family. This was especially true when her brother Don selflessly gave her the gift of 22 more years of life by donating one of his kidneys to Jane.
In 1973, a dashing young Barry Hafeman caught Jane's eye while she was serving tables. Soon they were going on dates together to the movies, after which, Jane would be welcomed home by her brothers who would shine spotlights on the couple in the driveway. Needless to say, Jane and Barry quickly fell in love and were married before the end of the year.
Which brings us to the joy that Jane found and gave in life: her three children and their spouses, and most importantly, her five grandchildren. Any of them would be challenged to think of a sporting event, play, musical, concert, gig, or competition that she had not attended. Whether the event was in town or three hundred miles away, Jane would find a way to be there, usually waiting afterward to give the performer a bouquet of flowers or their favorite treat. Then there was her energy that seemed to never run dry. When there was quiet in the room, Jane would always have long and winding stories of her children and grandchildren. When siblings needed care or a place to call home, Jane provided them a room. When there weren't funds to support the arts at Algoma schools, Jane started the Fine Arts Booster Club. When her fellow Union members needed someone to step up and coordinate schedules and food for a strike, Jane stepped up and made it all happen. When her factory closed, she took the opportunity to go back to school and earn her associate degree in horticulture. When family and friends needed floral arrangements for weddings and events, Jane started her own floral business staying up countless nights with her daughter Sarah, sister Jody, and friend Jean to ensure every color and petal was just right.
On Friday, September 29, Jane's energy did run out when she passed away with family members at her bedside. Now and most of all, we will miss Jane's smile. Not just any smile, but a wide-open smile as if she was fully taking in the joy of her family and friends all around her. Her smile told every one of us that she'd never ever ask a foolish question like, "Is this all there is?" Her smile was always there to remind us to, "Look at and love all there is." And all there is and always will be is love. We miss you, Jane.
Jane is survived by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Barry; children: Ben (Jessi) Hafeman, Jason (Lieneke) Hafeman, Sarah (Andrew) Kerbel; five amazing grandchildren: Grant, Olivia, Evan, Sophia, and Efrem; sister Jody; and brothers Don and Orville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jane was preceded in death by her parents: Orville and Audrey Fameree; Grandmother Mable Arndt; mother-in-law Helen; sisters Julie and Theresa; and brother Mike.
