Jose English, 92, Dies in California
Joseph Crummey English, 92, former local resident, died Wednesday in Van Nuys, Calif., where he resided since the death of his wife, Mrs. Louise Kohler English in 1939.
Mr. English was a widely known resident in the area and was a brother of Mrs. Mary Frances Lihou, a resident of the Old Ladies home, here, and of Elizabeth de Sylvia of Rochester, formerly of this city and reporter for the former Poughkeepsie Eagle News in the early 1920's.
A descendant of early Dutch and French Huguenot settlers in Hudson valley, Mr. English was the son of the late Joseph P. And Emma English and was born here September 18, 1867. He was associated with Smith Brothers for many years and after his retirement moved to Pleasant Valley.
Mr. English well known in musical circles in the county, having been a cornetist with Scofield's band at one time. He was a member of the Masonic organization and of the Musicians union.
Surviving, in addition to his sisters, are two nieces, Mrs. Jere B. Faison, New York City, and Mrs. Ruth L. Bale, Hartford, Conn.; and a nephew, Dr. Donald P. de Sylva, Lewis, Del.
Burial will be in California.
