============================
aka John V. Myers

The son of Charles & Barbara (Ripp) May, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for butcher Daniel Rea in Baltimore, Maryland. Four years later while hospitalized during the war, he listed Baltimore resident John Knapp as his contact. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. Several censuses claim he was born in Maryland, a statement the tombstone inscription proves erroneous.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Baltimore as "John V. Myers" September 23, 1864, as a substitute for James McNeil. He mustered into federal service there that same day as a private with Co. A, 1st Maryland Infantry, and promoted to corporal December 6, 1864. Listed as killed in action at the battle of Gravely Run near Petersburg, Virginia, on February 6, 1865, fortunately that proved to be a false report. He was shot in the left leg, however, resulting in a fractured tibia, and captured. His hospital records list him as "re-captured" April 3, although that surely refers to his liberation from captivity. Admitted to Douglass U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, on April 6, he remained there until he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate September 30, 1865, minus sections of his left tibia. His surname is "Myers" on all military records.

He married Laura Louisa Stephens, ten years his junior, ca. 1869 and fathered Charles Edward (b. 06/09/71), Lillie Ann "Annie" (b. 09/12/73 - married a Kroft), Effie Catharine (b. 05/??/76), Hettie O. (b. 12/14/79 - married a Bricker), Rosa M. (b. 04/??/85), Thomas A. (b. 10/??/91), Robert Lincoln (b. 05/??/92), Edith (b. ?, died at 15-4-12), Olive (b. ?, died at 4-1-26), and Ina (b. ?, died at 0-9-5). In 1880, he lived in Mechanicsville, Adams County, and in 1890 in Latimore Township, Adams County, where he died from "pulmonary tuberculosis." His death certificate lists him as "May" but "Myers" is indicated as an alternate name in the Indigent Soldiers List and the 1890 Veteran's Schedule
