Mack had no children of his own, but he was a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews. My father remembers Mack's amazing generosity - some might give a child a penny in those lean days, but Mack would give a quarter, which was a lot of money back then. He would take his niece and small nephews (including my father) to the local drugstore and buy them as much candy as they wanted. It was the only candy the children ever got, because the family was near-destitute in those days.
My father remembers Mack as always smiling, happy-go-lucky and good-natured. He loved to wear nice clothes and was a very sharp dresser. My father especially remembers one bleak Christmas day when his family had nothing - not even food in the house, so my father and the other children were going hungry. Mack arrived out of the blue with a carload of groceries for them - even fruit, which the children had hardly ever tasted. He made it a wonderful Christmas and my father has never forgotten his uncle's generosity at that time.
I never got to meet my great-uncle Mack, but through my father's memories I feel as though I know him now. May you rest in eternal peace, Uncle Mack. You are not forgotten.
