Nick was the son of Rebecca Elizabeth "Liz" Music and Perry "Pat" Newton Cooper. He was named for his grandfather James Nicholas Music.

He was very proud that he worked for the postal service for 17 years.

He was one of the top bowlers in the Dallas area with numerous 300 games and 800 series. His brother Bobby was a former professional bowler, and one of Nick's goals was to get into the ABC record books for most 300 games by brothers.
