Wife of Former Senator and Congressman Charles A. Towne, Succumbs to Cerebral Apoplexy
Mrs. Maude Towne, nee Wiley, wife of former Senator and Congressman Charles A. Eowne, died suddenly Wednesday night from an acute attack of cerebral apoplexy in the Hotel St. James, Manhattan, where she had been stopping temporarily pending the reopening of her own home at 1160 Ocean Avenue, Flatbush. Funeral services will be held in the Brooklyn house tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock, with the Rev. Dr. L. A. Harvey, pastor of the Fourth Unitarian Church, of which Mts, Towne had been an active member since coming to Brooklyn four years ago. Internment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery. Senator Towne is said to be prostrate with the deep grief he sustained over the unexpected death of his wife.
Mrs. Towne was born in Lansing, Michigan, on October 1, fifty tears ago. She was a member of a prominent family of that place. Her parents were Washington E. and Mary E. Wiley. She was a personal friend of Mrs. Mary Bryan, wife of William Jennings Bryan, and aided Mrs. Bryan in both of the first two Bryan Presidential campaigns in the reception of visitors at Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs. Towne's home was frequently visited by the Bryans and Mr. Bryan made his headquarters at the Towne home for years.
Mrs. Towne is survived by her husband, who was united States Senator from Minnesota and later in 1904, Congressman from the fourteenth District, New York. Harry G. Wiley, the only brother of Mrs. Towne, whose home was at Tampa, Florida, died in this city six months ago, following an operation.
