Orrin Taber enlisted on Aug. 19, 1861, in Manchester, New Hampshire, as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 1st Battlion, N.H. Light Artillery. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on Apr. 16, 1863. Mustered out Oct. 7, 1864, as a 2nd Lieutenant.

He came to California with his wife Calista Ann (Barker) and children in the early 1870s. He was a charter member of the John A. Dix Post No. 42 in San Jose, Calif. (Rosters published in the San Jose Daily Mercury, Mar. 24, 1882, and Aug. 11, 1886.)
