Reverend Thomas G. Cleveland

October 18, 1927 - March 20, 2020

Reverend Thomas G. Cleveland died peacefully on March 20, 2020, surrounded by his wife and his four children in beautiful Tamworth, N.H. He was 92 years old, and died of general old age.

"Hey, Hey - what a day, what a day!" was Tom's signature greeting to friend and stranger. Born in Baltimore, Md., Tom's father was Richard F. Cleveland, son of President Grover Cleveland. His mother was Ellen Douglas Gailor, the daughter of Bishop Thomas F. Gailor, of Tennessee. Tom was a strong athlete both at Milton Academy and Princeton University, where he blocked a kick and helped win an upset in the Penn-Princeton football game of 1946.

He married Charlotte Crocker in 1950, graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary and left for Alaska in 1954 as a missionary working for Bishop Bill Gordon. He and Charlotte raised four children in Holicachuk, Palmer and Tanana, eating salmon, moose and rabbits while absorbing Athabaskan philosophies. His years in Alaska, and friends like Henry Deacon of Holicachuk and George Edwin of Tanana, shaped the rest of his life.

In 1965, Tom joined Milton Academy in Milton, Mass., to teach religion and ethics as well as coach football and lacrosse. For 32 years, every sophomore took his legendary ethics course. A continuous stream of former students visited him in Tamworth throughout his retirement.

In 1997, he retired to live full time in Tamworth. He loved life in this special town and was active in progressive Democratic politics.

He is survived by his second wife, Ruth Elaine Cleveland; his four children, Tom Jr., John, Sarah and Ellen Douglas; and their families, including eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
