James Edward Steeley was born on July 29, 1928 in Montgomery County, Tennessee, the son of John "Calvin" Steeley (1907–1998) and Sophia Christine "Sofie" (Steeley) Steeley (1903–1981).

He was married 1st in 1949 to Mabel L Brown (1930–2016), and after having several children, they were later divorced. James was married 2nd on July 28, 1978 in Robertson County, Tennessee as the 2nd husband of Nannie Louise (Stanley) Smith ( 1934-1995).

A member of a Pentecostal church, he was a US Army veteran and was a retired supervisor from Civil Service.

Living in Mount Juliet, Wilson County, Tennessee, he was 95 years old when he passed away at home on October 21st, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nannie, the mother of his children Mabel Steeley and by his son Stephen Wayne Steeley. Survivors included three sons and two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five 2nd-great-grandchildren and two sisters.

Graveside Services with full Military Honors was on October 25th in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee.
